Does putting a new roof on a conservatory make it warmer?
Everything you need to know about replacing conservatory roofs
Here at Cousins, we have seen an increase in the number of enquiries for conservatory roof replacements in recent years, largely due to the fact that, yes, they do indeed improve the thermal efficiency of your extension!
A roof replacement onto an existing base and frames is a more budget friendly option than an entirely new conservatory whilst allowing the existing structure to be given a new lease of life. In years gone by, there were far fewer options, mainly poly carbonate or less thermally efficient glass. However, there are now far more modern alternatives to suit everybody’s home.
Thermally Efficient Glass Roof
All Cousins conservatories use Pilkington Activ Climate Guard glass due to it’s thermally efficient properties and ability to potentially reduce heating bills. The specialist coating on the surface of the glass reflects around 69% of solar energy, which is approximately twice as much as a standard glass roof. This allows your conservatory to stay cooler in the Summer and warmer in the Winter, ensuring you have an extension that can be enjoyed all year round!

LivinRoof
A LivinRoof conservatory / extension is another increasingly popular choice for roof replacements as it is specifically designed to be thermally efficient as well as a versatile, practical and attractive design option. The LivinRoof is constructed of solid roof panels that are able to have shaped glass inserted within the design to draw light into both the conservatory itself and the rest of your home.
The underside of a LivinRoof is left as a beautiful plaster finish that really incorporates the extension into the rest of your home. The LivinRoof comes with a fully insulated pelmet as standard, which can have Bluetooth speakers and/or spotlights inserted within it.

UltraRoof 380 Tiled Roof
Lastly, another attractive solution is the UltraRoof 380 tiled roof conservatory / extension. This is an option that has largely stepped into the place of traditional tiled roofs due to its lightweight design, ease of installation and increased affordability vs. traditional tiled roof extensions. Just like the LivinRoof, the UltraRoof380 tiled roof can also have glass panels inserted to add light to the build or Velux windows for that extra ventilation. The UltraRoof380 roofs are also left with the attractive plaster finish on the inside as with the LivinRoof, truly incorporating it into the rest of your home.
And the good news is, the majority of existing conservatories do not require planning permission to have a new roof installed upon them, making them an even easier solution to that chilly conservatory! LivinRoof and UltraRoof380 roof replacements would be subject to building regulations, however all Cousins roof replacements include a JHAI building regulations compliant certificate as standard, something that often sets us apart from other companies and gives you the peace of mind that your job is carried out safely and thoroughly at every stage.
Additionally, requiring planning permission, either for a roof replacement or an entire conservatory, is by no means the end of your extension dreams. Our dedicated and experienced project management team, lead by proprietor Jackie Fearn, can advise and walk you through every stage and, upon ordering, can refer you to our external planning expert who can apply for planning permission on your behalf. We even offer hardwood conservatories, which can allow customers to gain planning permission for a extension to a listed property, where a white PVCu build may have been rejected. You can also find out more from the Governments planning permission portal.Â
